The selected intern will be assigned to projects overseen by the intern coordinator, pertaining to timely topics important to agriculture and rural communities. As such, applicants should specify their areas of interest and how their background provides them the proper knowledge and abilities to excel in this internship.

The department carries out a number of programs, activities and functions, including media relations, issues management, and management of public relations campaigns and events. On a day-to-day basis, the department responds to media inquiries, arranges media interviews for AFBF leaders and staff; produces the organization’s newsletters, FBNews and Foodie News; writes and designs brochures and pamphlets for internal and external audiences; writes and distributes news releases; produces radio reports and video news releases, and oversees the organization’s public Web site; an intranet site, Facebook fan pages and Twitter account.

The department’s work program is designed to complement the programs conducted by state Farm Bureaus and to serve as a resource to state Farm Bureaus.

Interns will receive a stipend equal to $15 per hour, based on a 7.5 hour day, for work days included in the dates of the internship. The start and end dates of the internship are flexible, but the intern will be expected to work a minimum of 8 to 10 weeks. Housing will not be provided, but AFBF staff will be happy to assist with the search and provide some housing contacts.

The deadline for application is March 22, 2010. Applicants will be notified of their selection status no later than March 31, 2010.

AAEA summer intern to work for Farm Industry News

Each year, the American Agricultural Editors Association sponsors (through a Professional Improvement Foundation grant) one college student to work for 10 weeks at one of our member media companies. This year, the host media for the AAEA Summer Intern program will be Farm Industry News, under the direction of Karen McMahon.

In expressing her interest for hosting the AAEA summer intern, Karen wrote, “ Our magazine reaches 200,000 corn and soybean growers in the Midwest. We would be able to given an intern firsthand experience in writing, photography, and producing online material for the magazine. In fact, we are very involved in online video work and would be able to provide great experience in that area as well.”

Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A., is still accepting applications for its second annual scholarship program that provides financial assistance to ACT members. The scholarship deadline is Feb. 26.

The Yamaha-ACT Scholarship Program is broken out into two individual student scholarships and one chapter scholarship.  All three scholarships are aimed at helping students attend the annual Agricultural Media Summit (AMS), a professional development and networking opportunity for agricultural communications professionals in St. Paul, MN this July.

Interns will be selected during a short inverview process on Friday, Feb. 26 at the National ACT Professional Development Conference at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas.  (Applicants must attend the Professional Development Conference to be eligible.) Successful applicants will receive free registration and housing at the 2010 Agricultural Media Summit (and National ACT Conference) in St. Paul, MN. Training will consist of working with the CAB supply development team, participating in the Certified Angus Beef ^® Building Blocks for Success seminar for two days in Wooster, Ohio (all expenses paid), and riding along on an information-gathering and photography trip to a ranch or feedlot. Some travel is required; school-term internships work with the intern’s class schedule.

Past interns have had a variety of career goals that require effective writing. The internship offers valuable experience whether your target is print journalism, public relations or advertising copy writing. This is not a good opportunity for design. Many past interns have continued a working relationship with CAB, some as freelance writers and others as full-time employees after graduation.

The AHP Internship Program is a great way to provide students with the resume-building experience that’s so critical to today’s job market. Interns gain valuable hands-on real life experience and AHP members acquire additional help when and where they need it most.

AHP is the nation’s only non-profit professional association of over 450 members dedicated to promoting better understanding and cooperation within the equine publishing industry. Membership consists primarily of equine-related magazines, newsletters, and tabloids/newspapers as well as individuals, businesses and organizations serving the equine publishing industry.

AHP serves as the umbrella organization for the internship program and is responsible for creating the application process, providing the forms, the mailing list, and a directory of the participating AHP member publications and businesses. The Internship Handbook includes program guidelines, expectations and responsibilities of the intern and the AHP participating member, and a directory of AHP participants.  Each listing includes the publication or company name, a brief description, types of internships offered, availability/duration, requirements, information on compensation and housing, and contact information. Students apply directly to the AHP member, who will choose the applicants that best meet their needs. AHP members may hire more than one intern.

American Horse Publications also offers students wishing to become involved in the equine publishing industry an opportunity to join the association and participate in other student programs.

Student Membership is open to high school, college, and graduate students for an annual fee of $25. Student Members receive a certificate of membership, an opportunity to attend the AHP annual seminar at a reduced registration fee, a free listing in the online AHP Membership Directory, the AHP monthly newsletter, “AHP For the record,” and are eligible to enter the Student classes in the AHP annual Awards Contest. AHP Student Award Contest awards up to three $750 travel awards to attend the AHP seminar in Lexington, Kentucky, on June 17-19, 2010. Travel Award winners have an opportunity to meet leading equine publishing professionals and discuss career possibilities during the three days of educational sessions and related activities. One Travel Award winner will be selected at the seminar as the 2010 Student Award winner, who will win a cash award of $1,000 plus an all expense paid trip hosted by Publishers Press to one of their Two-Day Customer Education Seminars in Louisville, Kentucky, to have a unique experience to learn the printing process.

Students are eligible to enter the contest if they are a high school senior or an undergraduate college student during the 2009-2010 undergraduate college year, with at least one semester before graduation. All qualified applicants will receive a complimentary Student annual membership, a complimentary Student registration certificate for the annual seminar and a critique of their resume. The AHP Student Award Contest is open to residents of the US and Canada only.
