Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) is seeking college interns to work directly with its Director of Communications from June to mid-August, 2010. The internship is intended for students in their junior or senior years of college prior to graduation.

USW is the industry’s market development organization working in more than 100 countries on behalf of America’s wheat producers. The activities of USW are made possible by producer checkoff dollars managed by 19 state wheat commissions and through cost-share funding provided by USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service. USW offices are located in the Clarendon neighborhood of Arlington, VA, two blocks south of the Clarendon Metro Stop on the Orange Line.

Applicants can expect the internship to provide a well-balanced experience in marketing communications and public affairs work with a USDA/Foreign Agricultural Service agricultural commodity cooperator organization in the Washington, DC, area.

The experience will include:

  1. Researching and writing articles for USW newsletters; writing news releases as needed; and assisting the Director of Policy to draft trade policy communications as needed;
  2. Covering and writing about USW events such as trade team visits;
  3. Assisting the Director of Communications on promotional material production as needed;
  4. Updating the USW Web site and maintaining USW social media outreach;
  5. Assisting the State Outreach Coordinator as needed;
  6. Performing other general office and/or clerical responsibilities.

The student will be responsible for all living costs while in the Washington, DC, area, to include food, transportation to and from work and housing accommodations. USW will cover business travel and other associated costs. USW or supporting state wheat commissions will provide a stipend of $2,000/month for the months worked.

Ideal applicants must have excellent news writing and general professional communications skills, working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, an ability to work independently and in group settings, a demonstrated interest/connection to agriculture, and an interest in pursuing an agriculturally related career.
