Ag Media Summit 2017

by Hunter Howard, Member Relations Coordinator

Since I will be handing the reigns over to the newly-elected member relations coordinator, this will be my final blog post and my goodbye as well. It has been a pleasure to speak with so many members from across the nation and to help as many as I could!

Before we delve into the specifics of this particular AMS, let’s discuss what AMS is in general. Ag Media Summit is a joint meeting of the American Agricultural Editors’ Association, the Livestock Publications Council, the Connectiv Agri-Media Committee and the National Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow. This meeting helps to recognize some of the best communicators in the industry as well as help develop current skills through workshops. Companies will often show off their latest and great products at the AMS Expo and it can be a great opportunity to network.

AMS: Snowbird, Utah

Now, I’ve never been to Utah, so this will be a new experience for me, but I’m sure we can show up prepared and hit the ground running with all the information that the AMS website provides.

Ag Tours

If you just so happen to be arriving on Friday evening or Saturday morning, you might be able to catch the ride to the ag tours happening all day. With the extra cost of the tours, breakfast, lunch and dinner will all be provided. You’ll get to visit Antelope Island State Park, the largest island in the Great Salt Lake; Fielding Garr Ranch; The American West Heritage Center, which sits in Cache Valley, a route to Yellowstone National Park; a dairy cattle operation; The Salt Lake Temple; and end at the Tabernacle, home of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Welcome Party

If you had any intentions of skipping this, throw them out like yesterday’s trash. This party is a whole lot of fun. Music, good food and drinks, and great people make for an awesome night.

There are many sessions and workshops covering design, current ag issues, photography and more. For a full list of sessions, check out the AMS Guide here:

Awards Banquet

Just when you get used to the scene, it is time to pack it up and head home unfortunately, but not without a final goodbye. Awards for many different categories of publication are given here and many are recognized for their achievement in the industry.

AMS is a great convention to come to and it’s hard to put it into words what sets it apart from the others, so you’ll just have to find out when you get there!

Over and out,

Hunter Howard
