NCBA Accepting Applications For Public Policy Internship

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s (NCBA) government affairs office in Washington, D.C., is accepting applications for a summer 2012 public policy internship. The deadline to submit an application for this opportunity is March 12, 2012.

“Gaining valuable, hands-on experience through opportunities like the public policy internship at NCBA helps prepare college students to make the challenging transition from college to career,” said NCBA Executive Director of Legislative Affairs Kristina Butts. “We are looking for college students with an interest in the beef industry and in public policy to help NCBA represent cattlemen and women in Washington, D.C.  The internship is designed to work closely with the lobbying and communications teams on Capitol Hill and assist with NCBA’s regulatory efforts.

The full-time internship will begin May 29, 2012 and end Aug. 17, 2012. To apply, interested college juniors, seniors or graduate students should submit the application, an official college transcript, two letters of recommendation and a resume to internship@beef.org. More information and the internship application are available on NCBA’s website.

“This isn’t a ‘check-the-box’ style of internship. NCBA’s public policy interns work alongside NCBA staff on critical issues ranging from the estate tax to food safety, the environment and more.” Butts said.  “If you or someone you know is interested in this opportunity, we encourage you to apply.”

2012 AAEA INTERNSHIP APPLICATION

One college student in agricultural communications with interest in farm reporting and ag communications has a great experience of working in the agricultural communications field with an AAEA member each summer.

One of the great bonuses of the AAEA internship is that it includes travel expenses, hotel accommodations and registration fees to attend the Agricultural Media Summit (Aug. 4-8, 2012, Albuquerque, New Mexico). There, the intern can meet and mingle with hundreds of ag media professionals from AAEA and other organizations. The intern also helps coordinate the joint AAEA-Livestock Publications Council awards banquet presentation at AMS and performs other duties at AMS.

The intern earns a stipend, $4,500 for approximately 10 weeks, and another $1,000 to cover costs of attending AMS thanks to a grant from the AAEA Professional Improvement Foundation. Travel to and from the host company’s location and for living expenses during the internship are not included.

If you have questions, contact Future Ag Communicators Committee Chair JoAnn Alumbaugh at joann.alumbaugh@gmail.com or 641-744-2114.

The host company for 2011 was Living the Country Life, a Meredith Corporation publication. The AAEA 2011 intern was Bethany Sanderson from Kansas State University.

National Collegiate Reporting Competition

The Scripps Howard Foundation, with the Indiana University School of Journalism, established the Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition in 1984 to honor the memory of the journalist who led Scripps Howard Newspapers from 1922-1953 and United Press International from 1912-1920.

Journalism students submit an entry form, portfolio of their work, letter of recommendation, 400-word essay and resume to the Scripps Howard Foundation for consideration.Until 2006, the winners received scholarships and their college newspapers were awarded grants. But in 2006, the foundation and School of Journalism revamped the awards to include a 13-day guided tour to Japan and South Korea for nine national scholars.

Led by School of Journalism’s Dean Brad Hamm, the winners travel to Asia to study journalism in other cultures, visiting media organizations as well as cultural and historical landmarks. Roy W. Howard also had made such journeys as a journalist, persevering to land interviews with elusive leaders.

The 2012 trip is tentatively set for June 15-23 and will take winners to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hiroshima.
