American Horse Publications

The AHP Equine Media Student Award has provided students searching for a career in equine media with opportunities to meet and network with leading media professionals, businesses and publications at the AHP annual conference. The Award is open to high school seniors and undergraduate college students under the age of 25 who are looking for a career in equine media. The deadline for the 2024 AHP Equine Media Student Award is January 30, 2024.

Equine Media Travel Award winners each receive $1,000 toward travel and hotel expenses to the 2024 Return to Horse Country Conference in Lexington, Kentucky, May 16-18. During the conference, both Travel Award Winners will be interviewed by a panel of equine media professionals. The AHP Equine Media Student Award Winner will be chosen at this time and announced during the conference. The winner and the finalist will receive cash awards presented by Equine Network.

The AHP Equine Media Student Award is a great opportunity for any student serious about a career in journalism, marketing, photography, videography or any facet of equine media. It has also developed an invaluable source of media talent for AHP members to employ over the last 32 years.

Hoard’s Dairymen Associate Editor Position

The W.D. Hoard & Sons Co. is the publisher of Hoard’s Dairyman, Hay & Forage Grower, and the Journal of Nutrient Management. We are looking to add an associate editor to our Hoard’s Dairyman team. An editor of Hoard’s Dairyman works with the other members of the editorial team to edit and produce content for our print and online publications. Attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines are a must. An editor also represents the magazine at industry events and on farms. This position will report to the managing editor.
 
Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in dairy science, animal science, journalism, communications, or another related field. Experience in the dairy industry is strongly preferred, but a background in another aspect of agriculture would be considered. Prior writing experience would also be preferred. With deadlines being an inevitable part of publishing, good organizational and time management skills and the ability to work well under pressure are among the. characteristics of an editor. Effective editors have the work ethic and self-discipline to balance many projects and stay on schedule.

  

Animal Agriculture Alliance – deadline varies

The Animal Agriculture Alliance offer paid internship positions throughout the year (1 position in spring, 2 in summer, 1 in fall). All positions are full-time (40 hours/week) and can be conducted virtually or based in the Alliance’s office located in Arlington, VA near the Courthouse Metro Station.

Alliance interns assist with social media content production, research of key issues in animal agriculture, media monitoring, legislative tracking, developing reports and member resources and a variety of other projects along with supporting the Alliance team in executing projects like the annual Stakeholders Summit, College Aggies Online, trade show booths, marketing campaigns and more. Interns function as full-fledged members of the Alliance team and will be asked to contribute at a high level to help the organization achieve their mission of safeguarding the future of animal agriculture. Scholarships

Forrest Bassford Student Award Application Available – Deadline is Feb. 15

The Livestock Publications Council (LPC) is accepting applications for the Forrest BassfordStudent Award. The top winner will receive a $1,500 scholarship and a $500 travel scholarship to attend LPC’s annual convention and Ag Media Summit in Palm Springs, Calif., July 29 – Aug. 2. Up to three $750 travel scholarships to attend the convention will be given in addition to the top award.

Students participating in the convention will have the opportunity to interact with more than 500 livestock publication and agricultural communications professionals while attending workshops and seminars specifically related to this field. Alltech, award sponsor, will also provide the opportunity for award winners complimentary registration to attend the Alltech ONE Conference.

Applicants must be a college junior or senior at the start of the 2023-24 college year with at least one semester before graduation. The application deadline is Feb. 15.

Agricultural Communicators Network announces two scholarship opportunities – Due Apr. 3, 2023

The Agricultural Communicators Network is pleased to announce it is accepting applications for two scholarship opportunities for 2023.

Two scholarships will be awarded in 2023 to outstanding members of ACT for their achievements in leadership, career-related experiences, academics, and service. 

The Dr. James Evans Scholarship is the top scholarship offered in the amount of $3,000. To be eligible for this scholarship, the two top applicants will be required to take part in an in-person interview during the Ag Media Summit. The two finalists will each receive a $1,000 travel stipend to attend the Summit, which will be held in Palm Springs, California, from July 29 to August 2, 2023. The second-place finalist will be awarded the Past Presidents’ Scholarship of $1,500.    

Applicants must be current members of ACT and enrolled as an undergraduate student at a university or college during the time of their application. Recipients will be selected based on the following:

  • ACT involvement, leadership activities, and other campus organizational involvement
  • Academic achievements
  • Career-related experiences
  • Reference recommendations


Applications are due on or before Monday, April 3, 2023.

Arthur Leal Study Abroad Scholarship – Due Jan. 31, 2023

The Arthur Leal Memorial Study Abroad Scholarship has been established in honor of the late Dr. Arthur Leal, who was a well-known, influential young agricultural communications faculty member at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Leal, too early in his career, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 36. As a student at the University of Arkansas and at the University of Florida, Dr. Leal studied abroad several times and was passionate about encouraging his own students to participate in international experiences. This scholarship fund was established by Dr. Leal’s family and friends through the National Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow.

Scholarship Criteria

  • Dr. Leal valued learning of all kinds, but his favorite way to learn was through experiences. Therefore, students seeking to participate in experiential learning opportunities are encouraged to apply.
  • Students must be participating in university-sponsored study abroad opportunities, which may include (but are not limited to) coursework abroad, exchange programs, study tours, international research projects, and internships. Evidence of acceptance into a study abroad program must be provided in order to receive funds.
  • Students must have completed at least one full semester of coursework in an academic program by the start of their international experience to eligible to apply. The scholarship is open to students at all stages of their academic careers—undergraduate through doctoral students are eligible. 
  • Students must be dues-paying of National ACT in the academic year of application.
  • Students must submit a statement of purpose that includes clearly stated goals related to their proposed study abroad experience.
  • Students whose study abroad experiences focus on the discipline/profession of agricultural communications will receive preference, but all types of study abroad programs will be considered.
